Welcome back to the school year. Yaaaaa, wooooo, ahhhhhh!
You’ll be happy to know Viz Cult (or the Visual Culture Working Group, for the more formal of you) is back! And we’re going retro...
When Viz Cult first began it was a reading/working group. Faculty and staff suggested readings or brought “text” of any kind for the group to discuss in order to develop our understanding of and broaden our perspectives on what’s possible in the study of Visual Culture/Studies/Literacy/Stuff. We’ve since moved on to pedagogical concerns and technologies, and we’ve even suggested a Common Reading, but it’s time to step back and ask: “So, where (or what) are we now?”
What is visual culture?
Is is culture, contexts, content?
How many of us are doing “it”?
What is its role in our scholarship, our teaching, our curricula?
What should it be?
Do we need t-shirts?
If these are questions that interest you, please come to the next Viz Cult meeting on Thursday, September 30th from 4:15-5:30 to be held in ArtsWest 102J (there is lots of end of the day parking, so come on down). Snacks and intellectual stimulation will be provided.
Suggestions for texts (of all kinds) are welcome. I’ll send an update once I have suggestions. Links to the text will be posted on our blog.
We've had a suggestion to spend our first meeting showcasing what we do in our courses and our research that might give some shape to viz cult AT Elon. I like this idea. It would give us a renewed sense of who we are, then we can better move on to what we do.
ReplyDeleteI'll work on keeping this from spiraling out of control, but imagine that you bring in one "text" that defined the possible contributions you could make to viz cult. Then you can introduce this text (and hey, why not a suggested reading that would help us better understand your text) to the meeting. I can create a database for us that would also double as a course guide and faculty roster that could be used by interested students and peers. Comments? Yeah, post em here.

I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.
